Better Hearing For The Holidays

Holiday season is around the corner, and this is the time that all of our patients want to hear better than ever.

Being able to hear conversation at a holiday dinner table is one of the most important times that a hearing aid will  improve your family time. However, noise still seems to be the most difficult listening environment for all hearing aid wearers. Even though advances in technology have greatly improved hearing in noise, some loud environments still come with challenges .

Here are  a few strategies that we recommend for hearing in noisy environments:

• Pick a good seat.  Try a seat furthest away from the kitchen or any place that has loud cleaning and traffic coming in and out. Typically a corner seat will be the quietest. A head table seat is great for speech reading.
• While we love holiday music, keep it soft or better yet, off during dinner.
• All the cool kids will have their phone at the table.  Utilize your hearing aid app to help to help reduce some of the background noise. Perhaps an adjustment in volume or a change in the settings will make a significant difference. Sometimes it’s ok to bring your phone to the table and play with the settings to optimize location of speech or reduce noise for comfort.
• Connect with family and friends. Make sure your hearing aids are charged or batteries fresh. You don’t want to miss a thing, well , except cousin Stella’s jello-ring.
